The method for screening animals that are susceptible to diseases associated with intracellular parasites comprises analyzing an animal's genetic material for the presence of one or more specific genetic sequences associated with bovine Nramp1 which sequence associates with susceptible of an animal to disease caused by intracellular parasites and is selected from the groups of SEQ ID Nos: 12, 13, 14 and 40 as depicted in the specification. The method for screening animals that are resistant to diseases associated with intracellular parasites comprises analyzing an animal's genetic material for the presence of one or more specific genetic sequences associated with bovine Nramp1 which sequence associates with resistance of an animal to disease caused by intracellular parasites and is selected from the groups of SEQ ID Nos: 11, 15, 29 and 31 as depicted in the specification.
