Methods and pharmaceutical compositions for stimulating the growth of neurites in nerve cells. The compositions comprise a neurotrophic amount of a compound and a neurotrophic factor, such as nerve growth factor (NGF). The methods comprise treating nerve cells with formula (I) and a neurotropic factor. The compounds disclosed can be used to promote repair of neuronal damage caused by physical trauma or diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and ischemia-related stroke, neural paropathy, neural degenerative disease, motor neuron disease, sciatic crush, peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, spinal cord injury or facial nerve crush.
