The method involves raising the track (6), removing the upper region of the old ballast (40) in relation to the bed cross-section, comminuting it and accumulating it. The track is then placed on the ballast bed remaining on the earth base (41). The track is then raised again and the remaining ballast bed is then removed and the track sunk on the exposed earth base. Finally the track is raised and the comminuted bed stone is dumped on the exposed earth base.
