The present system allows detection of the approach of trains, how far they are away, their speed and direction of approach or distancing, and it may be used at stations, railway flag stops and at level crossings with and without a guard. The system is based on the emission of acoustic pulses along one of the rails 1 and on the detection of the echoes on the other rail 2, transmission from one rail to the other taking place by means of the wheels and axles 3 and 4 and remaining metal mass of the train 5. The system consists of a pulse generator 6 connected to an acoustic transducer 7 applied to a rail, two acoustic sensors 8 and 9 placed on the opposite rail at a short distance from one another, an amplifier module and filter 10 connected to the two sensors, and a processing unit 11 that analyzes the echoes received, eliminates noise and spurious echoes, calculates distance and speed of trains and sends the processed information to two modules, the visualizing module 12 for display of the train's distance and speed values and the actuator module 13 for activation of railway crossing barriers or acoustic or luminous signs when the approach of trains is detected.
