Titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-4V) and stainless steel are bio-materials that can carry loads and that are used in many orthopaedic applications and frequently preferred in the treatment of the breaks and defects in human bones. The main inorganic phase of human bones is calcium hydroxyapatite (HA: Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2). When a metallic implant is joined with human bone, an interaction starts with surface reactions. The extent in which the bone-metallic implant duo will act as an integrated unit depends on the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of both components. The surfaces of the metallic implants made for example from 316L or Ti-6A1-4V, which can carry load and having a high traction resistance, can be coated with bioactive HA bio-ceramics.
