A computer is provided for monitoring information on a smartcard relating to the functions used, viewing time, channel change time etc. and send this via the same network (5) used to transmit the adverts to the television (3), and back to the central station (6), so that statistical information can be compiled on the television user. Adverts are displayed (audio)visually on at least part of a television screen whilst it is being used to watch television programs or videos, or whilst it is being used as a computer screen, or alternatively the adverts can be sent out in audially. The television is fitted with a receiver (8) for information sent from a central station over a communications network (e.g. GSM network) or another type of network, or provided on disk.
