In accordance with this invention, there isprovided a lubricating composition comprising a majoramount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minoramount of an additive having the formula Mo2L4 whereinL is a ligand selected from xanthates and mixturesthereof and, in particular, xanthates having asufficient number of carbon atoms to render the additivesoluble in the oil. In general, the xanthate ligand,L, will have from about 2 to 30 carbon atoms.
