An expendable oceanographic probe (12) includes a body having a weighted nosesection (50) and an after body having a tail (46) for stabilization. A spoolof wire (14) is paid out through the tail of the after body for coupling to adata acquisition system. The expendable oceanographic probe also includes asensor (56) exposed to the seawater for measuring a seawater property and forproviding a signal representing the measured property to the data acquisitionsystem over the wire. A pressure sensor (62) of the probe is exposed to theseawater for determining the depth of the probe as the probe descends into theseawater with respect to the measured seawater property by perturbing themeasured parameter signal at a predetermined pressure.
