The present invention relates to the process of proteinsynthesis in eukaryotic cells. More particularly, the present inventionrelates to translation and more specifically to the initiation of translationin such cells. More specifically, the present invention relates to proteinsinvolved in the initiation of translation in animal cells, to the modulationoftranslation thereby and to the interaction and sequestering of a limitingfactor of initiation of translation, elF-4E. The present invention alsorelates to isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding a human protein, a4E-binding protein (4E-BP3), as well as vectors and host cells harboringsame. In addition, the present invention relates to screening assays foridentifying modulators of 4E-BP3 activity and to the identification ofmutants thereof which abrogate its interaction with elF-4E.
