RNA polymerase transcription promoters containing compounds represented bygeneral formula (I) or salts thereof. A method for determining the basesequence of a DNA which comprises obtaining a nucleic acid transcriptionalproduct by using RNA polymerase with the use of a DNA fragment as a template,separating the thus obtained nucleic acid transcriptional product and readingthe nucleic acid sequence from the fraction thus separated, wherein the above-mentioned nucleic acid transcription reaction is carried out in the presenceof at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compoundsrepresented by general formula (I). Since these polyamine compounds have anexcellent activity of promoting the transcriptional activity of RNApolymerase, use thereof in the method of determining a DNA base sequence withthe use of RNA polymerase makes it possible to prolong the DNA sequence lengthwhich can be read in a single sequencing.
