A method of applying an essentially non-slumping, sprayable refractorycastable composition to a surface is disclosed comprising (a) preparing atempered, pumpable first component comprising (i) 100 weight percent of arefractory composition comprising from about 50.0 weight perecent to 99.9weight percent of a high purity silicone dioxide, and from about 0.1 weightpercent to about 30.0 weight percent of a binder, and (ii) form about 0 weightpercent to 30 weight percent water based upon 100 percent of the refractorycomposition, wherein the water is present in an amount sufficient to achieve apumpable consistency of the first component to enable the first component tobe pumped and applied through pump means, associated hose means and associatednozzle means, (b) adding a second component comprising a flocculating agent,to the first component to form a sprayable refractory castable composition ator just prior to the time of application of the sprayable refractory castablecomposition, (c) introducing air through the nozzle means just prior to thetime of the application of the sprayable refractory castable composition, and(d) applying the sprayable refractory castable composition to the surfacewithout the use of forms. A method of applying a high purity silicon dioxiderefractory composition is also provided including casting with the use offorms.
