METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SYNTHESIZING HIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGERY USING ONE HIGH-RESOLUTION CAMERA AND A LOWER RESOLUTION CAMERA

An apparatus and method for transforming imagery recorded by one camera intoother imagery that differs from the first imagery, using imagery collected byone or more additional cameras that differ in their characteristics orparameters from the first camera. Example differences include spatial positionof the camera, spatial resolution, spectral characteristics and spatiallayout. The apparatus generates a synthetic high-resolution image using a high-resolution camera (206) positioned and a lower-resolution camera (208). Thehigh-resolution image data is warped using the lower-resolution data togenerate a synthetic high-resolution image (114) having viewpoint of the lower-resolution camera (208). The high-resolution synthetic image generationroutine (110) comprises the steps of correcting the spatial, intensity andchromanence distortions of the image data acquired from the high-resolutioncamera (206) and the lower resolution camera (206) (step 202), subsequentlyfiltering and subsampling the corrected high-resolution data (step 210),computing the parallax between the high-resolution data and the low-resolutiondata (step 212) and warping the high-resolution image to create a syntheticimage (114) of the scene (200) having a viewpoint of the lower-resolutioncamera (208) (step 214).
