Gram negative bacterial virulence genes are identified, thereby allowing theidentification of novel anti-bacterial agents that target these virulencegenes and theirproducts, and the provision of novel gram negative bacterial mutants useful invaccines.The invention comprises an attenuated Pasteurellaceae bacterium selected fromthe groupconsisting of Pasteurella (Mannheimia) haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, andActinobacillus pleuropneumoniae comprising a mutation in a polynucleotidesequence thatencodes a fhaC polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 70%identical tothe fhaC amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 20, wherein the mutation results indecreased virulence and attenuation of the bacterium.
