Composition comprising crosslinked, thermosetting, water soluble polymer having nonionic moieties derived from acrylamide, methacrylamide or both; anionic moieties derived from alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acids having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms and salts thereof; and optionally cationic moieties derived from unsaturated monomers containing amino groups or quaternary ammonium groups, said polymer having aldehyde functionality.
