A novel sol-gel method is described for the preparation of solid-phase microextration (SPME) fibers. Fibers made of fused coated with a bonded sol-gel layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Such fibers extract small concentrations polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkanes, aniline derivatives, alcohols, and phenolic compounds from dilute aqueous solutions to such a degree that the extracted analytes can be analyzed by gas chromatography columns. The method also enables preparation of sol-gel PDMS fibers which possess significantly higher thermal stability (360 DEG C) than conventionally coated PDMS fibers that often start bleeding at 200 DEG C.
