A gasket holder (1, 101) for a pipe joint (100), the holder (1, 101) having means (3, 127) for engaging a flange (107, 111) or ferrule of a pipe (105, 109) and means (5, 125) for holding a gasket (7, 103) in position relative to the flange. The gasket holder (1, 101) engages the flanges with a friction fit, thereby retaining the gasket (7, 103) in position on the end of a pipe during assembly of a pipe joint. Further, the gasket holder can act as a stop to prevent excessive compression being applied to the gasket.
