The system requires the preparation and transmission periodically of an identification code together with information on current location and flight path. A regional surveillance station listens continuously for the messages, determines each aircraft's trajectory within the region and detects risk of collision with geographical features . Avoidance information is transmitted back to the aircraft. The transmitted message may contain information on air speed as well as speed over the ground, actual position and speed vector.
