An object of the present invention is to provide novel liquid crystalline compounds which have bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane structure and make liquid crystal compositions principally for TFT display mode, STN display mode, or TN display mode develop preferable various physical properties, particularly liquid crystalline compounds from which liquid crystal compositions by which driving at a low voltage and a high speed response are possible and which have a high reliability can be produced;to provide liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound; andto provide liquid crystal display devices fabricated by using the composition: the liquid crystalline compounds can be expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R₁, A₀ to A₃, Z₀ to Z₃, X, ℓ, m, n, and 0 are defined hereinbefore.
