A probe (1) producing a convergent ultrasonic beam under the control of an emitter/receiver (4) is positioned perpendicularly to tissue for examination by a computer control system (2,3). The beam which has a frequency of 30-100 MHz is focussed for a penetration of 20-30 mm and sweeps the tissue receiving reflected signals which are processed to produce easily interpreted medical pictures
