PURPOSE: Present invention relates to a negative electrode for a lithium secondary battery having a high discharge capacity and a high initial efficiency, a negative electrode material and a process for preparing the same. CONSTITUTION: A negative electrode is made of a graphite material and a carbon material coated with a lowly crystalline carbon. The interplanar spacing (d002) of the graphite material determined by wide-angle X ray diffractometer for the plane (002) is not more than 0.336 nm. And the discharge capacity exceeds 372 Ah/kg.
