PURPOSE: Use of solid nucleophilic reagents for conversion of benzylic halogen functionality on polymers to other functionalities via a nucleophilic substitution process greatly simplify and reduce the cost of producing those desirable functional derivative polymers. CONSTITUTION: A reagent is provided for the conversion of a benzylic bromide functionality on a brominated isobutylene/para-methylstyrene copolymer and a benzylic halogen functionality on a polymer to other functionalities comprising: a solid nucleophilic reagent comprising an element selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorous, carbon, silicon, magnesium, lithium, sodium, and potassium..
