PURPOSE: A method for improving image quality by adaptively improving contrast based on the histogram variation and an apparatus thereof are provided to detect the variation of the distribution of a histogram, and to control the histogram equalizer according to the variation. CONSTITUTION: A method for improving image quality by adaptively improving contrast based on the histogram variation includes first and second steps. The method improves the image quality by providing an equalized image of the input video signal expressed in predetermined gray levels. At the first step, a degree of dispersion of the histogram of the input image is measured. At the second step, the level of equalization for the equalized video is adaptively controlled according to the degree of dispersion.
