PURPOSE: A benzylidene--butyrolactone; manufacturing method thereof; a usage as a uv-ray absorbent in pharmaceutical and cosmetic composition, sunscreen product, daylight protecting agent, and hair hygienic product; and a usage as a uv-ray absorbent to improve industrial products like as paints, a surface coating agent, a plastic, textiles, package stuff and rubber are provided. CONSTITUTION: A process for the preparation of p-methoxybenzylidene-4-methyl--butyrolactone comprises of: adding 4-methyl--butyrolactone 64g(0.5M) to sodium methoxide 27g(0.5M) suspension in methyl tert-butyl ether 400g, and adding anisaldehyde 68g(0.5M) while shaking at room temperature; maintaining the mixture under circulating-flow for 1hr, cooling, adding iced water 200g to the mixture, and controlling pH to be 5 by 10% sulfate; distilling the product after the phase being separated; gaining the final product 65g.
