METHOD FOR FORWARDING INTERNET PROTOCOL(IP) PACKET OF LOCAL AREA NETWORK EMULATION(LANE)-BASED IP ROUTER THROUGH SOFTWARE TO IMPROVE FORWARDING PERFORMANCE

PURPOSE: A method for forwarding the Internet protocol(IP) packet of a local area network emulation(LANE)-based IP router through software, is provided to read only the header of a corresponding packet when a received IP packet demands forwarding, and to read all of the corresponding packet only for a packet not-demanding forwarding to another interface, when reading the IP packet from a packet memory to a central processing unit(CPU). CONSTITUTION: Information on local area network emulation(LANE) client(LEC) and medium access control(MAC) from a packet stored in a packet memory, is read in a LEC layer circuit inside a central processing unit(CPU). The kind of the packet is checked, if an IP packet, the information on the LEC and MAC is transmitted to an IP protocol, to read information on an IP packet header in the packet memory. Whether the packet should be forwarded to another interface is checked by using the receiving address of the header. If so, new IP header information is generated and the information is delivered to a corresponding LEC function circuit. The delivered information is stored and an LEC function is performed in the corresponding LEC function circuit. If the receiving address of the packet is a self router as a check result of the receiving address, a corresponding function is performed by reading all of the IP packet in the packet memory. If not an IP packet as a check result of the packet kind, a corresponding address resolution protocol(ARP) function is performed by delivering the information on the LEC and MAC to an ARP protocol and reading all of the ARP packet in the packet memory.
