The leather coating method using an aqueous leather coating composition and an aqueous leather coating composition is provided. The aqueous coating composition including copolymerized acetoacetate or acetoacetamide monomer 0.4 to 10% by weight and comprises an aqueous emulsion polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of from -20 ℃ 10 ℃. In another embodiment, the aqueous coating composition comprising a copolymer acetoacetate or 0.1 ~ 6% by weight of acetoacetamide monomer, the copolymerized carboxylic acid monomer and 2-15% by weight and having a glass transition temperature of from 0 ℃ -40 ℃ and a water-based emulsion polymer. Wherein said polymer is such that 0.20 equivalent of transition metal per equivalent of copolymerized carboxylic acid is contacted with a transition metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate in less than pH9.
