The battery charger 10 recharges the reusable batteries B 1 , B 2 ,... B N in a manner that prevents overcharging of the batteries. The charger includes a voltage source and a lossless shunt configuration that can be customized to charge any number of batteries. Charger 10 may be a current limiting voltage source controlled by a voltage or state of charge of the battery to be recharged. The lossless shunt is a pair of transistors (Q 1 and Q 2 ; Q 3 and Q4; ... Q 2N-3 and Q 2N-2 ) for each pair of batteries, and one end and transistor pair between the battery pairs. Inductors L 1 , L 2 ,... L N-1 disposed at the other end in between. Oscillators 14 and 204 having the same but opposite two phases Φ 1 and Φ 2 control each transistor that supplies charge to a given battery during the first phase and causes charge to equalize between the pair of batteries during the second phase. Used to Equalization does not overcharge either battery and continues until two batteries have reached full charge.
