PURPOSE: A method for interpolating binary image using variable threshold is provided to reduce block effect and restoration error after interpolation, and to improve the speed and the capacity of interpolation. CONSTITUTION: When all pixels(A,B,C,D) have binary value, a context value is obtained by using a predetermined method with using surrounding pixels(C0,...,C7) according to the position of the pixels to be interpolated(P1,P2,P3,P4). A variable threshold of the pixels to be interpolated(P1,P2,P3,P4) dependent on the context value is obtained. An interpolation value is obtained by putting predetermined weight to the positions of the pixels(A,B,C,D,C0,...,C7) according to the pixel to be interpolated(P1,P2,P3,P4). The interpolation value is compared with the variable threshold for calculating binary interpolation value of the pixels to be interpolated(P1,P2,P3,P4).
