PURPOSE: A fast search algorithm using a property of a subset of an RS-code word in an inter-cell asynchronous W-CDMA system is provided so that initial synchronization and hand-off can be easily performed due to a short pilot obtaining time, by using a number of available pilots. CONSTITUTION: The respective base stations are distinguished by different M skip codes. Here, the base stations generate a pilot sequence by combining their specific M skip codes and pairs of M+1 binary codes. One pair of the M+1 binary codes are used as common codes for searching a starting point of the pilot sequence, and the other M binary codes are used as code alphabets of the M skip codes. In addition, a mobile station searches the starting point of the pilot sequence by employing a common code interface filter, and generates the whole length of the skip code by searching front two skip code elements. Thus, the mobile station can rapidly obtain initial synchronization, without using a grouping identification concept. According to a pilot channel of a forward direction link, the mobile station obtains the initial system synchronization of a current base station, and performs a time frequency phase search on and the transmission signal of the current base station. As a result, a cellular network is simply designed, an initial synchronization obtaining and hand-over algorithm is easily carried out, and a capacity of the pilot channel of the forward direction link is not decreased.
