The device 1 has a magnetic head unit 17 with a housing 18 in which the magnetic head 47 is located. The magnetic head 47 includes a head face 49 on which the gap end of the conversion gap 51 extends, and a first mounting surface 107 having a right angle between the gap faces 59 through the conversion gap 51. If the magnetic head unit 17 has a front portion 29 in which the tape guides 31 and 33 form a part and are provided with the second mounting surface 75, the front portion is the first mounting surface of the magnetic head 47 ( 107). This allows to precisely define the position of the magnetic head 47 with respect to the tape guides 31 and 33.
