PURPOSE: A method for preparing an active material of an anode for the lithium secondary battery is provided, to reduce the heating time, to inhibit the generation of minor phase and to improve the electrochemical properties. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of dissolving lithium salts, nickel salts and cobalt salts, and optionally salts of metal selected from the group consisting of Mn, B, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Cu and Al in a solvent; adding chelating agent to the solution and heating the solution to prepare a gel; thermally decomposing the gel to obtain the organic-inorganic precursor; heating the organic-inorganic precursor to obtain an anode active material. Preferably the active material is represented by the formula: LiNi(1-x)CoxO2, wherein 0 x 0.5. The chelating agent is preferably selected from group consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylene glycol), poly(acrylic acid) and poly(vinyl butyral). Preferably the heating process is carried out at 700-900 deg.C for 5-20 hours.
