Weighing process for measuring amount of scrap metal conveyed to melting furnace comprises radiation source and Geiger counter for calculating weight by continuous measurement of amount of radiation absorbed
Weighing process for measuring amount of scrap metal conveyed to melting furnace comprises radiation source and Geiger counter for calculating weight by continuous measurement of amount of radiation absorbed
The process operates continuously as the scrap metal is conveyed, and uses the principle of measuring the absorption of radiation by the metal in relation to its density. A vibratory conveyor (9) with a transporting belt (8) includes a weighing device (19) formed by a radiation source which irradiates the passing metal and a Geiger counter which measures the proportion of radiation absorbed. The radiation source is enclosed in a cylindrical container with a window directing the emitted radiation exclusively in the direction of the passing metal. A rotary shutter blocks the emission of radiation during interruptions of the conveying process. The radiation source and detector define a plane which intersects that of the conveyor belt at an angle between 30 and 70 degrees.
