The nitrogen layer in precipitated nitride form is superimposed by a further layer containing nitrogen largely dissolved. The surface nitrided at 450 to 600 deg C is subjected to an energy input with a power density greater than 20 kW/cm2 and a duration of less than 5 ms to raise its temperature to at least 1200 deg C. Subsequent nitration takes place at 350 to 450 deg C by ion implantation or plasma.
