The method involves reconstructing planar sectional images of an examined object from magnetic resonance signals produced by a magnetic resonance instrument which has an inhomogeneous main magnetic field and by at least one non-linear gradient magnetic field. Original image elements are produced by multi-layer excitation from magnetic resonance signals of original volume elements (14) which are arranged in several adjacent, curved layers (10) of the examined object. The spatial position of the original image elements is determined, and image elements of a planar sectional image are produced from the original image elements which are arranged in an environment of the respective image elements. The image elements of the planar sectional image are representative of volume elements (16) of a planar layer (12) lying within the curved layers.
