Jawed chuck for round or cylindrical work comprises six interconnected clamping jaws driven via three equi-spaced elements linked to main drive unit for uniform clamping force.
The six or more clamping jaws (5) are interconnected so that all jaws exert the same force on the workpiece (2), using three drive elements (3) for the jaws linked by line (7) to the drive unit (10), the three elements (3) equi-spaced at 120 deg round the chuck (1). The drive is mechanical (10) and each drive element (3) connects drivably to 2n jaws (5), taking n' as a natural number. In a variant, using a pneumatic drive, the jaws are connected individually to one of the several interconnected drive elements, and in an hydraulic drive version the clamping jaws are connected individually to the hydraulic drive elements with all drive elements interconnected. The connection device (7) has a disk (8) to which all the drive elements (3) are connected by rods (9). Assuming the chuck to consist of a main body constructed in three planes, then the drive unit lies in the bottom plane and is composed of a center worm gear and worm.
