The charge has an associated electrical power supply and control arrangement (24) for igniting and influencing the combustion characteristics of the charge with a light arc plasma. The charge contains at least three sub charges (11,13,23) with different combustion characteristics. The first charge (11) is matched to the acceleration requirements of different shells. The second (23) has a higher combustion rate. The same maximum gas pressure is always achieved irrespective of the initial powder temp. The third (13) has a lower combustion rate and is chemically converted so that the maximum pressure level resulting from the first sub charge is extended in a definable manner.
