Production of long forgings out of cast blocks or continuously cast billets involves use of a pilger step rolling process for hot shaping of such blocks or billets

The hot cast block or billet (3) is shaped by pilger step rolling, with its cross section reduced at least by 60 % and its length extended in a ratio of 1:3 with respect to its initial length. During shaping, the other end of the block or billet is held by rotatable and axially displaceable means which is kinematically coupled to the shaping unit. An Independent claim is also included for an installation which includes a rotary hearth furnace, and a pilger rolling mill with associated roller conveyors for production of seamless pipes. It additionally includes means (5) for holding, rotating and axially displacing the block or billet.
