A tubular insert (2) fits onto the base of a filter. The end of the insert near the base is open and closes substantially with the base of the filter. The wall of the insert has one or more scales (10) extending from the lower edge (5) up towards the upper edge (9). The insert is conical with the wide open cross-section forming the upper opening. A tubular funnel (3) can fit in the insert and has windows to see through to the scales.
