The method involves delivering high-frequency excitation pulses (RF) to a patient with a repetition time, TR. Nuclear resonance signals (S) are read out under a read gradient (GR2) in a readout window between the excitation pulses. The nuclear resonance signals are phase-coded before the read-out window. The phase coding is reversed before the next excitation pulse. The repetition time is selected so that fat-bound protons experience a phase rotation of an integer multiple of 180 deg with respect to water-bound protons, through the effect of the chemical shift. Preferably, the excitation pulses are delivered with alternating phases.
