The cell has an active region in which incident photons generate charge carriers. Clusters of atoms or molecules, exhibiting an absorption maximum in a wavelength region where the optical layer of the active layer exhibits an absorption minimum, are present in the active layer. These may be e.g. 5000 gold atoms or 3000 gallium arsenide molecules.
