Water sterilization assembly has housing with a water inlet and outlet and an ultraviolet lamp within housing, which flows through a chamber around the lamp (12). The lamp (12) is essentially a rod shaped unit (32) surrounded by transparent protective pipe (19) keeping water away from the bulb. The lamp (12) is separated from surrounding pipe by crosspieces (38, 39) which are poor heat conductors.
