The device has a bimetallic element for triggering a switching process depending on the degree of heating of the bimetallic element and a feed line for delivering the current to be switched to the bimetallic element. The bimetallic element is connected in a branch of a parallel circuit, whereby the current to be switched forms the total current in the parallel circuit. An Independent claim is also included for a switching arrangement for switching current when a defined current level is exceeded.
