A procedure for the controlled generation of misfiring with IC engines has the engine misfire generated by masking out ignition or injection in targeted fashion. With a control apparatus for the control of the ignition and/or injection for each cylinder, the outputs assigned to the respective cylinders are no longer attended to. For each cylinder a first value which determines the misfire cycle and a second value which establishes the cause of the misfire is adjusted in the control apparatus. For each cylinder, a counter is provided, especially a ramp counter. A misfire is then demanded when the counter reaches the first value and the counter is subsequently reset.
