In a biological waste water treatment process, a biological reactor has a water outlet discharging treated water through filters to a permeate chamber. The flow of discharging permeate is regulated in proportion to the rate at which incoming impurities are admitted to the biological treatment chamber. At times when there is a sharp increase in the arrival at the bio-reactor of untreated water holding different concentrations of impurities, the flow of permeate through the filter is increased in the same proportion, by increasing the differential pressure between the bio-reactor and the permeate chamber. The differential pressure is changed by raising the column of liquid in the bio-reactor, or by increasing the suction on the filter outlet side.
