Solids discharged from a separator (5) are fluidized and passed to a fluid bed cooler (16). The cooled fraction (20) fed to the fluid bed reactor (1) is drawn from the fluid bed cooler. The non-cooled fraction (19) discharged from the solids vortex cooler is drawn through an overflow unit (18). A thermal process partially oxidizes carbon substances from a fluid bed reactor (1) within a pressurized system. The circulation system comprises the fluid bed reactor, a separator (5), a solids fluid bed cooler (16) and a solids return passage. The solids removed by fluidization within the separator are sub-divided into a first fraction (20) which is partially cooled before surrender to the solids fluid bed cooler, and a second non-cooled fraction (19). The flow rate of the first partially cooled fraction is regulated without the need for a mechanical device. The solids discharged from the separator are fluidized and passed to the fluid bed cooler. The cooled fraction fed to the fluid bed reactor is drawn from the solids fluid bed cooler. The non-cooled fraction discharged from the solids vortex cooler is drawn through an overflow unit (18).
