The lance tip (9) has an optic (2) and a reflex sensor (3) to establish the surface of the sediment layer. A pressure transmitter (8) contacting the water through holes (19) in a bushing (15) measures the depth of the sediment below the surface. A temperature sensor (4) determines the sediment or water temperature. As the lance is pushed through sediment, a load cell (6) measures its compactness. Extensions can be screwed onto the lance to vary its length, so that a single person in a boat can operate it with ease.
