The device includes a control center (1) for outputting an ignition signal to each of one or more flash units (3,4). The control center has a memory for storing the settings of each flash unit, and a program memory for storing a routine for igniting each flash unit. The control center may include a memory for recharging each flash unit, taking into account the respective recharging characteristics of a flash generator (3) of the flash unit. The control center has at least one generator address button (13) for setting the number of flash ignitions for each flash unit per program step. An Independent claim for a method of controlling a flash system with at least one flash unit is also included.
