Process for pickling planar surface, especially strip-like material to be treated comprises moving the material through a vessel (2) and spraying with a pickling solution from a number of nozzles (7) from above and below arranged in the moving direction of the material to be treated. The solution contains hydrochloric acid. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the pickling process comprising a stretched relatively uniform flat vessel having a number of nozzles spraying the pickling solution onto the upper and lower sides of the material to be treated. The nozzles (7) are arranged laterally in the wall of the vessel (2) above and below the material and inclined in the direction of the material. Individual nozzles or groups of nozzles are connected to different pumps (9) for conveying the pickling solution.
