Liquid or paste is applied to a continuously moving surface by a number of nozzles with overlapping spray patterns according to DE19722159. The emergent spray is modified in amount or distribution pattern to change the local transverse and/or longitudinal application rate. The modification can be made by a wide variety of methods, e.g. deflecting individual nozzles, deflection by blowing air, deflection by a plate, using adjustable deflecting flaps, differential flow control on individual nozzles, addition of a diluting medium, heating the nozzles, addition of hot air or steam.
