A laboratory centrifuge has a housing containing a powered rotor on a vertical axis within a container, to which access is provided via a lid on the housing. The two-part housing has a lower section (1) and base (3) fixed to the drive unit (10) and an upper hood (2) fixed to the base (3). The lower section is separated at its base from the drive unit by a gap (14) which de-couples the lower section from the rotor oscillations. The base section (3) is linked to the drive unit by vibration dampening cross-pieces (21, 32) made either of metal or rubber.
