The safety device has a retaining component which is especially a flexible or movable rigid sunscreen(2) which can be tensioned by hand or electrically. The drive is a piston and cylinder unit which is in functional communication with an energy accumulator as a power source which in conjunction with a sensor releases energy to act upon the piston(5) in the event of a crash. The energy accumulator is a pyrotechnically activated propellant(4). An airbag may be integrated in the sunscreen.
